TYPES OF DOOR HARDWARE
KNOBS
Knobs typically come in a set. A "knobset" is a door set consisting of inside and outside knobs.
LEVERS
Levers typically come in a set,. A "leverset" is a door set consisting of inside and outside levers. Levers are sometimes utilized when a knob is hard to turn for occupants with arthritis or soft muscle tone.
DEADBOLTS
A lock in which the latchbolt is engaged by using a key or a thumbturn. The two most popular versions are single cylinder (keyed deadbolt on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior side) and double cylinder (keyed deadbolt on both the interior and exterior sides)
HANDLESETS
The door hardware that encompasses a grip or handle along with a deadbolt function to lock the door.
COMBINATION LOCKS
A combination lock is usually a deadbolt, a handle trim plate and a knob or leverset.
MORTISE LOCKS
A mortise lock is a type of lock installation where the mortise body is placed in the interior of the door. These locks contain several parts, such as the lock body (the part installed inside the mortise cut-out in the door), the lock trim , a strike plate and the keyed mortise cylinder which operates the locking/unlocking function of the lock body.
RIM LOCKS
A rim lock attaches to both the interior and exterior of the door and is engaged by using a key or thumbturn on both or either side to open the door.

Keyed Entry - Both knob/levers locked or unlocked by key outside or turnbutton inside.
INTERIOR
Privacy - Bed/Bath - Both knob/levers locked or unlocked by emergency key outside or turnbutton inside.
Vestibule - Knob/levers locked automatically when door is shut.
NON-LOCKING
Passage - Hall/Closet - Both knobs always free.
Half Dummy Trim - Does not turn or perform a function other than for decorative purposes or as a pull.
FINISHES
The finish is the color and polish of the metal of the door hardware. A finish can help coordinate and complement the look of your design style. Polished finishes have a mirror-like appearance whereas satin finishes have a brushed or matte finish.
DICTIONARY
Choosing a lock for your home can be hard to accomplish if you don’t know lock terminology. Here are some definitions to help you.
Backset - The measurement between the edge of the door to the center of the hole drilled for the lock.
Bolt - The piece of metal that protrudes and secures or closes a door.
Cylinder - The round assembly of the lock which provides the ability to lock a door through the tumbler and the keyway.
Deadbolt - A lock in which the latchbolt is engaged by using a key or a thumbturn.
Double Cylinder - A double cylinder product is typically used on a front or back exterior door and is operated with a key from the exterior and interior of the home.
Dummy - A term used to describe a stationary piece of door hardware that does not provide any latching or security function for the door.

Function - The type of door hardware used by a specific entry or door.

Handing - There are left-handed levers and right-handed levers. To determine the appropriate handing for your door, look at the hinges from the exterior side of the door. If the hinges are on the left, you require a left-handed lever. If the hinges are on the right, you need a right-handed lever.

Throw - The measurement of the projection of a deadbolt latch.
Thumb Piece - The small moving part on the grip of a handle that is depressed when opening a handleset.
